Whither Centrism

Krauthammer today writes that last week’s election moved the Democratic Party rightward. If that’s the case House Speaker-elect Nancy Pelosi doesn’t see it that way. The Washington Post reports that she is backing Rep. John Murtha in the battle for House Majority Leader. Her decision, sources say, is motivated both by Murtha’s early opposition to the Iraq War and the bitter fight she engaged in with Murtha’s rival, Rep. Steny Hoyer.

I’m willing to believe Pelosi wants people on her leadership team she can trust. That’s what smart politicians do. Even so, the selection of Murtha, should it be approved by the rank and file, could backfire on Democrats in 2008 and have grave policy implications for America.
