Webb and His Fighting Scots-Irish

He sings the epic of William Wallace, praises the Confederate soldier, singles out the heroic blood of a White Southern ethnic group and is celebrated by Patrick J. Buchanan. No, he’s not Mel Gibson. The characteristics describe the newest member of the Democratic caucus in the U.S. Senate, James Webb of Virginia. I write about it here in The New York Sun. Maybe the embrace of Senator Webb means the Democrats are finally able to put aside extreme notions of political correctness as part of a comprehensive strategy to retake the South. Or maybe they’ll look the other way so long as the author of such comments is a serious former Marine Officer against the War in Iraq. It will be interesting to see Webb fit in with Senators Kennedy, Kerry, Clinton, Boxer, and Obama, etc.

Oh, and, by the way, all that stuff about Webb can be found in his popular history, a work of non-fiction, Born Fighting. Maybe George Allen focused on the wrong books during the campaign.
