Pittsburgh’s Fate

The City of Pittsburgh stands as a warning sign to cities of what can happen when pension liabilities and health care costs for municipal workers outweigh revenue. These are budget busters that touch every city in America. In Pittsburgh, which has never really recovered from the loss of manufacturing decades ago, these forces are more acute. I filed a dispatch in the New York Sun on the mayor’s race in Pittsburgh. In Pittsburgh, the city’s mayor is a 27-year-old, Luke Ravenstahl, who looks remarkably like John Tobin of West Roxbury.
